19/04/2008 Great Britain Junior Trial Regatta

St.Neots Rowing Club were represented at the Great Britain Junior Trial Regatta by 4 girls and 1 boy. Only crews and scullers that had already competed at the 3 long distance trial or had met the ergo standard were permitted to race.

The Trial Regatta is run in exactly the same way as that for the British Olympic Team. It starts with a time trial over 1900m then crews are seeded into semi-finals from which their position determines which final they progress to. This way all crews end up with a ranking.

In the first time trial, for the Women’s Pairs, Jo Fitzsimons with her partner, Jenny Arnold, of Henley led off the 15 crews. Natalie Bream with Almeda Gare of Molesey started second and the Saints Junior 16 pair of Polly Hetherington and Bethany Astell started in 5th place. As the crews came down the course it was obvious that Fitzsimons was moving very fast and so their time proved, covering the course 14 seconds quicker than the second crew from reading. Bream also rowed very well, finishing less than a second slower. Hetherington and Astell had performed extremely well at the Spring Assessment finishing in 4th place, and following performances on a training camp were expected to repeat this. Over the first half of the course they were on target with the 4th fastest time, however then disaster struck in the form of a muscle pull in Astell’s chest which prevented her from pulling very hard. Despite this and moving across the lake for lane 1 to lane 7, they finished the race in 9th place. However after a visit to the Phyiso the pair was withdrawn.

In the semi-final the remaining St.Neots girls were drawn together and in adjacent lanes. Fitzsimons got the quicker start and pulled out a lead and then just sat there in front. Breams pair also looked comfortable in 2nd place to make sure that both pairs made it into the A Final for ranking 1 to 6.

In the final Fitzsimons knew that her main opposition would come from the reading crew that had won the other semi-final, however, their race plan dealt with this threat. From the starters command GO Fitzsimons’ pair shot out to a lead which was 3 seconds at the 500m marker, 6 seconds at the 1000m and 11 seconds at the finish. Bream finished in a strong 3rd place. This is the 5th year running that St.Neots have had a rower in the top pair.

In the Boys single sculls Sam Howell was the St.Neots representative. Last year he finished 19th in the time trial and then worked his way up to finish 13th. This year he finished 12th in the time trial to lift him into the A/B semi-finals. In his semi he went too hard in the first 3rd of the race and paid the inevitable price and faded to 6th. He changed his race plan to be more realistic and in the B final attacked the 2 scullers that, on time were just ahead of him, and in doing so let the tussle for the top places go. This strategy worked very well and he finished in a very creditable 4th place to lift him to a ranking of 10th. The St.Neots coach, Martyn Rooney, said "It was a day of ups and downs. Jo Fitzsimons is hitting top form at the moment and should do well for Great Britain at the upcoming Munich Regatta. I was a bit disappointed with Natalie Bream and her partner as I had though that they could finish second. However it was most upsetting for the young girls to have to withdraw after such promise, but I am sure once Bethany Astell has received treatment and rehab they will be back. Sam Howell also responded very well in the final following a poor race plan in the semi".

13/04/2008 Great Britain Under 23 Trials

Jacqui Round gains selection for Duisburg International Regatta

In 2007 Jacqui Round, of St.Neots Rowing Club, became the first home-grown rower to represent Great Britain at a ‘Senior’ event when she raced in the Women’s Quad at the World Cup event in Amsterdam. Unfortunately this was followed by a shoulder injury at the final trials and she had to miss the World Under 23 Championships.

However Round is made of hard stuff and worked very hard on her recovery strategy and kept the cross-training going. At the national team ergo test last month she was one of the top performers with a new personal best time of 6:55. She then stroked her eight to 4th place in the Women's Head of the River Race, the best ever result for a St.Neots member.

She suffered a further set back when after, being invited to the Senior Team’s trials in Belgium, her pair’s partner suffered an injury and they had to withdraw. She was then given a new partner, Vicky Bryant of Durham. Despite having very limited time together they performed well at the Under 23 trials finishing as the 3rd fastest pair. There then followed a series of seat races where individuals on each side of the boat are tested against others from their side, that is strokeside or bowside. Round moved herself up the rankings to be the top strokesider. Her best performance came in a pair with Kirsty Miles of Oxford Brooks University and this pair have been selected to represent Great Britain at the Duisburg International Regatta on 16 -18 May. They will also form part of an eight with other U23 rowers.

The girls of Natalie Bream (17), Polly Hetherington (16), Jo Fitzsimons (17) and Bethany Astell (15) started 4th based on last years result. In the first 1k of the 3k race they were being caught by a crew from Sir Williams Borlase School and Bedford High School who having started in front, were pulling away. However it was our girls who paced themselves better in the strong head wind, and in the last 1k moved away from SWB and up on BHS to finish in a very strong 2nd place and claim the Silver medals. With 3 of the crew eligible next year the Gold medal will be the target for 2009. The boys’ crew of Sam Howell, Huw Jarman, Thibault Jeangout and Alex Davies had a strong start and overtook a crew at the end of the island. After this they steadily made ground on the next crew finishing just a short distance behind on the finish line. They finished in 11th place from 32 starters a good result.

In the Women’s junior events Natalie Bream was the fastest of the Saints girls with a time of 10:11.1 which gave her 2nd place in the Junior 17 event. Jo Fitzsimons was just behind in 10:11.7 for 4th place in the Junior 18 event only 2 seconds behind the winner. These results were from fields of 22 and 26 respectively.
